PSHE
Statement of Intent
At Heddington, PSHE is at the heart of everything we do, nurturing the children at our school to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. We are committed to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of everyone at the school. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, are our core Christian Values; Perseverance, friendship, respect, trust, truthfulness and creativity.
Our intention is that when children leave Heddington, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.
We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions both during their time at Heddington and later on in life. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health and spiritual well being. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
What do we want Children to Gain from PSHE?
By the time children leave Heddington we want them to have acquired the knowledge and skills which form a secure foundation that will prepare them for a life of learning and to be a global citizen. Children will be able to:
- Approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
- Be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
- Appreciate difference and diversity
- Recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty
- Understand and manage their emotions
- Look after their mental health and well-being
- Develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
- Understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level
- Have respect for themselves and others.
- Have a positive self esteem
How we Implement
Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the wider curriculum and beyond in later life. Promoting spiritual, moral, social and cultural including British Values is an integral part of the whole school PSHE curriculum, and is therefore often taught within another subject area or as part of the whole school day.
PSHE is taught across the school from FS1- Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school we follow the Coram SCARF PSHE scheme. The scheme is broken down into 6 core areas which we focus on each term across the school. As part of the scheme we have an annual visit from the Wiltshire Life Education bus complimenting the learning in the scheme. We also have visits from the Emergency services, NSPCC and other members of the community, which enhances our PSHE curriculum.
During daily assemblies, our core values of perseverance, friendship, respect, trust, truthfulness and creativity are explored further, providing opportunities for children to develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We challenge all our pupils to look for opportunities to demonstrate our call values and encourage then to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
How we Assess Impact
PSHE learning is either recorded collectively in a class floor book or in individual work books. Children have regular opportunities to look through their learning in both to discuss, review and evaluate previous learning. At Heddington we follow the SCARF PSHE scheme of work which is separated into 6 different units covered throughout the year. Each unit is broken down into key themes which children and teachers assess their learning against.
The PSHE co-ordinator has time to assess and review PSHE learning across the school by talking to pupils, looking at their floor books and individual work books and observing lessons.
Our PSHE co-ordinator is Miss Elmes
